Summary 0007173: Wrong input interpreter - cannot input Japanese text.
Description Using Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic.image and Squeak-3.10-1.i686-pc-linux-gnu, X11Encoding encoding returns nil. This is done within a primitive (primGetEncoding, in ImmX11Plugin.c).
Due to this, ActiveHand keyboardInterpreter returns a MacRomanInputInterpreter, and I cannot input Japanese characters, even after installing 'Japanese Environment Installer'.

There should be
1) A documented way of changing input interpreters. Ideally, this should be without ugly hacks like the one mentioned at http://www.nabble.com/UTF-support-in-Linux--td18349142.html [^] .

2) An explanation of whether the above behavior of primGetEncoding is correct, and if it is, why, and if not, what it should be.
Steps To Reproduce
Additional Information I am running Squeak with -encoding UTF-8 -textenc UTF-8

Here is the output of 'locale' on my system:
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

I can input Japanese text correctly in QT and GTK applications.
