Summary 0003478: 'Smalltalk Introduction' project is a disaster
Description The 'Smalltalk Introduction' project, which seems to have replaced the 'Worlds of Smalltalk' is a disaster because it cannot be followed by non-experts and non-experts don't need it.

It starts out with the fancy code of an abstract. It doesn't give any method for executing the code. Then it starts listing lots of commands. You can't copy the code and paste it into a workspace. It says that commands end with periods, but none of its examples end with periods. It doesn't even tell you how to get a workspace to retype things in. It was clearly coursenotes that went along with live instructor to explain things.

The 'Smalltalk Introduction' provides a dangerous illusion of helpfulness. Experts may not notice that it cannot be used by non-experts. It provides no useful information for non-experts and it will confuse and alienate beginners - this is why I say that it is a disaster. It has no business being front and center in the default Squeak image. It should be removed and the 'Worlds of Smalltalk' brought back.

Hi Greg,

Its not obvious until you think about it. But you can run the code w/o coping it. Just select it and "print it" (The linux equivalent of Cmd-p on my mac).

See my comments on your other report (Mantis 0003479 ) for more on copying.

Also to get help learning check out Squeakland and the squeak land mailing list.

http://squeakland.org/pipermail/squeakland [^]

Good, knowledgable and patient people monitor that list with a mission of helping more people learn squeak.

If you want to help improve the documentaion use your expertise as a new comer to write down the questions and confusions the intro raises at your current state of understanding.

I assume your effort in writing these reports means you have a strong motivation for learning squeak. Welcome.

Yours in service, -- (wiz) Jerome Peace
