Summary 0007335: Squeak is Soundless on Ubuntu
Description Currently the Squeak that is distributed with Ubuntu has no sound.

Beeper beep

is silent.

Additional Information This is a problem is with the squeak distribution.

It also affects Scratch distributions.

The technical fix is known.

The plugins vm-sound-OSS and vm-sound-ALSA need to be in the
squeak distribution inorder for sound to work.

They are missing.

The human part of the fix is a mystery.
There has been a bug report on the Ubuntu bug tracker for a year now.
The fixing action has not been taken.

I recently added a comment to the bug report.
So far no person has notice or acknowledged this.

I've reported the problem to our list.

This is a blocking level problem.
If people can't down load a squeak with sound they will think (rightly) that squeak is too broken for use.

You only get one chance to make a first impression.

Also, you can't solve other sound bugs until this is out of the way.

The question is what can WE do?

First for people who have downloaded etoys there is a workaround based on pointing the -plugin path to the etoy directory.

This causes squeak to start up with a debug box complaining about nothing to load. But after dismissing that squeak works with sound.

a suivre

The fix to this problem is to include the vm-sound-ALSA module in the plugin directory. When I copied one from the etoys package installed for me by squeakland sound worked again.

My recommendations to the ubuntu folks are here: [^]

AFAIK no one at ubuntu listening enough to get back to me. At least not yet.
So this is out of my hands for the moment.

Check the other mail in that month for the rest of the discussion.

If it is a problem with the Ubuntu Squeak VM package, this issue should be addressed at them in their BTS
