Summary 0000508: Walking through portal
Description I've moved my avatar through several portals as described
in the User's Guide and cannot "jump" from one virtual
world to another.

This symptom occurs with both the simple worlds from
the Tutorial as well as the full Teapot.

[1] What specific capabilities are needed to "walk through"
the portal (for example, perhaps collision detection is
assumed to work in some way that does not on my HW/SW)?

[2] Perhaps add another 3d icon on the top of each portal
to "jump" through the portal as a workaround.

What additional data would be needed to help isolate
this problem.

Hm ... this sounds really odd. However, let's try the following (which does not require collision detection or anything):
* Click on the "camera icon" on one of the windows leading to other spaces (Mars, Underwater, 3Body, Dungeon etc)
* This should make a camera sound and will create a "snapshot" (which is the equivalent to a bookmark ... err landmark ... in Croquet)
* Go to the dock at the bottom of the Croquet window and click on "snapshots"
* Click on one of the snapshots to enter the space
This should teleport you right into the space without requiring any other interaction.

Are you sure you clicked on the + sign above the portal to open it?

OK. The steps described work, so apparently I can move between spaces
using snapshots, but not by "moving" through the portals.

What kind of steps should I take now to help isolate this problem?

So it now shows a - sign, yes.

Something else I noticed. If I move towards the portal, I see a 'blink'
about the time I should be going into the portal but the avatar continues
to show less & less of itself & then finally appears again behind the portal.

In first person mode, the blink occurs just after I have penetrated the
portal.

Does this mean that you could move through the portal but noticed the flash, or are you still have this problem?

I've noticed that the sphere portal has that problem sometimes. It usually gets fixed walking to the other side. You can tell if it will work or not depending on if you can see through to the other world or not.

It seems to be some sort of timing issue. Something hasn't noticed you've walked through already and are looking back at it.

Yes - I still have the problem. Let me explain a little more clearly.

When I the avatar "through" the portal (in a 3rd person view), I see the
front of the avatar being clipped by the portal. I see the blink before
the avatar disappears completely / appears behind the portal.

Moving through in first person view, I approach the portal until I can
only see the portal display. Continuing to move forward, I see the portal
display. At the point I assume I am penetrating the portal, I see
 - image behind the portal,
 - then the blink,
 - then the image behind the portal
At no point did I enter the portal (unless I do the snapshot workaround).

If this helps, I noticed that during my testing, the following errors are
reported in the Squeak3D file.

ERROR (file sqOpenGLRenderer.c, line 395): a GL function failed -- GL_INVALID_ENUM
ERROR (file sqOpenGLRenderer.c, line 395): a GL function failed -- GL_INVALID_ENUM
